Gostaria de voltar à edição de fevereiro, quando lembrei ao amigo leitor que ética e estética são as duas palavras mágicas que farão a diferença neste novo milênio. Dizia que nas atitudes, ações e até mesmo no mundo material do fazer ou fabricar, só haverá qualidade, ordem, amizade, harmonia e paz, onde houver ética e estética. Pois bem, nessa edição, o tema volta com força total. Volta na bela entrevista que o botânico Guillean Prance deu à jornalista Mariana Barbosa, em Londres, onde ele colocou muito bem: ?A difícil e complexa questão ambiental só será solucionada quando houver uma mudança ética e moral na sociedade?. E mais: ?Temos que envolver todas as religiões do mundo para produzir uma ética que diga que o Homem precisa agir como verdadeiro zelador do planeta Terra?. A entrevista de Ghillean Prance está nas páginas 9, 10, 11 e 12 desta edição e vale a pena ser lida e meditada, pois ela mostra a angústia de um ambientalista sério preocupado com os rumos do egoísmo devastador do ser humano.

O tema ética está também na matéria de capa "O racismo na escola". Por ser um material didático importante nas escolas brasileiras, a Folha do Meio em todas edições de maio - para lembrar a Abolição da Escravatura - coloca a questão negritude, raça e discriminação em pauta. E aproveitando o lançamento do livro editado pelo MEC "Superando o racismo na escola", organizado pelo professor Kabengele Munanga, tratamos do assunto com dicas para professores e exemplos de preconceitos até nos livros didáticos. Páginas 5, 13 e 14.

E a discussão sobre ética, como linguagem desse século, continua e está muito bem explicada pela professora Cosete Ramos, na página 7, onde ela fala sobre o grande desafio deste milênio: justamente a Educação do Caráter.

Voltando, caro leitor, ao que disse no início dessa nossa conversa, veja como a ética está presente em todos os outros temas dessa edição: na página 3 o Prêmio Nobel da Paz, Norman Borlaug, fala dos transgênicos e pede um voto de confiança para os cientistas, pois eles devem ter chance de alimentar o mundo. Logo em seguida, o senador Bernardo Cabral (PFL-AM) clama pela ética das ONGs e chega a propor uma CPI para desmistificar as ONGs picaretas; a discussão em torno do Código Florestal é só uma relação de ética entre a produção e a preservação; e o jornalista Arnaldo Jabor amplia o debate, envolvendo inclusive a ética da imprensa, quando discute o espaço que a mídia dedica aos formadores de opinião egoístas e vazios, ilhados nos muitos castelos de Caras de nossa sociedade.

Está aí, amigo leitor, mais uma edição da Folha do Meio. Temos certeza de que a vida só é vivida quando olhamos para trás, mas ela só pode ser entendida quando olhamos para frente. E é olhando para frente que acreditamos que o apelo de Ghillean Prance será atendido: - Procuram-se bons zeladores para o planeta Terra!

We would like to remind you of the February edition, when we mentioned to our reading friend that ethics and beauty are the two magic words that will make the difference in this new millennia. We said that in the attitudes, actions and even in the material world of making or manufacturing, there will only be quality, order, friendship, harmony and peace, where there are ethics and beauty. Well, then, in this edition, the theme comes back with full strength. It returns in the beautiful interview that the botanical scientist Guillean Prance gave to the journalist Mariana Barbosa, in London, where he said so truthfully: the difficult and complex environmental issue will only be solved when there is an ethical and moral change in society. And more: ?We have to involve all the religions in the world to produce the necessary ethics that says that mankind needs to act as the true caretaker of planet Earth?. The interview of Ghillean Prance is on pages 9, 10, 11 and 12 of this edition and it is worthwhile to be read and meditated upon, for it shows the anguish of a serious environmentalist worried about the paths of the devastating selfishness of human beings.

The theme of ethics is also in the cover story " Racism in schools ". Since Folha do Meio is an important educational material in Brazilian schools, we will remember the Abolition of Slavery in all May editions, placing the issue of negritude, race and discrimination in our guideline. And by taking the advantage of the release of a book edited by the Ministry of Education and Culture" Surpassing racism in schools ", organized by teacher Kabengele Munanga, we deal with the this subject with tips for teachers and examples of prejudice even in educational books. On pages 5, 13 and 14.

The discussion on ethics, as the language for this Century, continues and is well explained by teacher Cosete Ramos, on page 7, where she talks about the great challenge of this millennia: the Education of the Character.

We return, dear reader, to what we said in the beginning of this edition, see how ethics is present in all the other themes of this edition: on page 3 the Nobel Peace Prize winner, Norman Borlaug, talks about transgenic products and asks for some trust for scientists, for they must have a possibility of helping feed the world. Soon after that, senator Bernardo Cabral (PFL-AM) pleads for ethics in the NGOs and even considers investigations to demystify some ?fake? NGOs; the quarrel about the Forest Code is just a relation of ethics between production and preservation; journalist Arnaldo Jabor extends the debate, also involving the ethics of the press, by discussing about the space that news dedicates to selfish and shallow opinion makers, who are separated from society inside their many castles.

Here is, reading friend, another edition of Folha do Meio. We are certain that life is only lived when we look backwards, but it only can be understood when we look forward. And by looking forward is that we believe that the pleads of Ghillean Prance will be answered: - Good caretakers for planet Earth are needed!
